CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background of Study
English is one of important subjects
taught to students besides the other primary subjects at school. It is the
first language studied in many countries either as a second or foreign
language. In general, it is taught from the elementary schools up to
universities level. Moreover, it is also learned to informal course to pass the
examination as necessary part for career progression while working for an
organization or business with an international concept.
Every teaching process which is done
by a teacher must have aims to be achieved at the end of class because teaching
is an effort to improve students’ knowledge and behavior. According to
curriculum 2004, one of aims of English teaching is “develop communication
skill by listening, speaking, reading and writing”. It means that the aims of
teaching English are to develop reding
skill, to prepare the student to be able to listen, speak, read and write. And
to create the comfortable classroom activities for student, the teachers are
expected to design the classroom activities that can develop those four skills
of the student.
In teaching reading English as a foreign
language, the teacher usually face different difficult in the classroom such as
the students are at different levels, the class is very big, the students do
not want to speak English or keep using their own language, and the students
are not in cooperative. Hammer (1988:127) describes the difficulties faced by
the teachers in teaching speaking and in the classroom solution.
The main goal of teaching in
Indonesia is to achieve proficiency of language skills; listening, reading,
writing and speaking. Through this study, the writer would study reading skill. Actually, reading is a subject that
students’ practices to read
in target language (English) in the classroom that is created by teachers. It
means that the student expresses the meaning of simple transaction and
interpersonal conversation to interact with other students. As stated by Mursia
(1979:9) the fluency in speaking is related to speaking practice that
determined, so many factors concerning ones’ ability to express him/her in
target language.
Speaking as one of four language
skills that is very important to be used in language. It is used more than
other language skills in our daily communication. Therefore, both speaker and
listener should encode the message conveyed in an appropriate language, while
the listener has to decode the message from the speaker.
Furthermore, achieving the goal of
speaking in the classroom, the teacher gets some serious problems such as
technique to be used, learning, facility, time allocation, and the students’
readiness in practicing speaking. Since the teacher is one of important factors
that seems more dominant in the classroom with the students. A qualified
teacher can create a better situation of study in spite of the facilities of
learning is relatively incomplete but she or he has certain tricks and
strategies in providing the lesson to the students in the classroom. The
relationship between teacher and students is more important than the curriculum
and other material presented. It can be said that the teacher has the main
roles in motivating their students to pay attention to the lesson being
presented in the classroom.
Based on the explanation above, the writer is
interested in conduct a research related to some serious problems that faced by
the teachers in speaking. There is fact today that the teacher has difficulties
carrying out English which are originated from some factors such as students’
education background, self confident and learning facilities, and also the
teacher’s variable. As the result, the teachers of course, get more problems in
teaching English in general and conversation in specific.
Specifically, English has been taught in junior high
schools, including speaking as recommended by curriculum. However, the goal of
teaching speaking is frequently unsuccessful. In fact, the teachers must create
their performance well in teaching to fulfill students’ ability in learning
speaking.
The teachers often faced the difficulties in
teaching speaking, particularly different level of the students, large classes,
the lack of vocabulary, using their own languages, silent preferences, and
uncooperative. Based on the explanation above, the writer want to conduct a
research related to find out the difficulties in teaching speaking at SMP.
